Troubleshooting Starlink Connectivity
With Starlink, there are a few different setups that can be used. These have similar troubleshooting steps which can be used to help determine if Starlink is the issue, or if it is another factor that could be affecting the Micro-I's connectivity to the user's network.
For assistance setting up your Starlink router, please see the following guides:
Gen 1 Router: Gen 1 Router - Setup Guide - Starlink Help Center
Gen 2 Router: Gen 2 Router - Setup Guide - Starlink Help Center
Gen 3 Router: Gen 3 Router - Setup Guide - Starlink Help Center
Please follow the troubleshooting steps which apply to your Starlink setup. After each step please try reconnecting your Micro-I, if it does not connect move on to the next step.
- Setup 1: Basic Starlink with modem and Starlink with extra mesh hardware
- Setup 2: Starlink with additional ethernet hardware
- Setup 3: Starlink with ethernet hardware and user-provided Wi-Fi mesh network
Please note the Starlink setup guide, mentions the following: "After the installation process, it may take a full 12 hours for the Starlink system to reach optimal performance."
Setup 1: Basic Starlink setup with modem and Starlink with extra mesh hardware
This is the basic Starlink kit that supports Wi-Fi connectivity. This does not allow any ethernet-connected devices, as it requires extra hardware to be purchased. It also covers basic setup with extra "Wi-Fi Mesh" hardware that extends the range by having the primary Starlink router wirelessly connect to another Starlink access point.
To troubleshoot please follow the below steps. After each step, please try reconnecting your Micro-I, if it does not connect move on to the next step.
-
- Reboot both Starlink and Micro-I.
- Move Micro-I to a different location within the range of the Starlink access point (optimal range of 3 to 5 meters).
- Having the Micro-I too far away from an access point could cause issues.
- Having the Micro-I too close to an access point could cause issues.
- Split the network from combined to 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz networks, then connect the Micro-I to the 2.4GHz network
- Open the Starlink app on your phone or browser.
- Visit your Starlink account.
- Open the settings for the router.
- Toggle the option for "Split 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks" to "On".
- Confirm other devices can connect to the Starlink router.
- If no other devices can connect, run through basic troubleshooting, or reboot the router by visiting "Settings > Router > Reboot Router".
- If all attempts to get other devices to connect fail, contact Starlink support.
Setup 2: Starlink with ethernet hardware
This Starlink setup has additional hardware to allow ethernet connections. This is through the use of a Starlink ethernet adaptor (one port) and an ethernet adapter switch (multiple ports). The ethernet adapter provides a wired connection and can be used with any connected Starlink mesh node.
The Starlink Gen 2 router does not have built in ethernet ports and requires a Starlink ethernet adaptor to be purchased and installed.
To troubleshoot please follow the below steps. After each step, please try reconnecting your Micro-I, if it does not connect move on to the next step.
- Connect Micro-I to ethernet.
- Option 1: Connect the Micro-I directly to the Starlink ethernet port using an ethernet cable.
- Option 2: Purchase an ethernet switch. Connect the ethernet switch to your Starlink ethernet adapter using an ethernet cable, then connect the ethernet switch to the Micro-I using a second ethernet cable (Please note - you may need to purchase an additional ethernet cable).
Setup 3: Starlink with ethernet hardware and user-provided Wi-Fi mesh network
This setup extends off of Setup 2, where a user will have a Starlink setup with ethernet hardware and be using their own Wi-Fi mesh hardware alongside it to provide the Wi-Fi network across their home. Depending on the user-provided hardware, this will also allow extra ethernet connections.
To troubleshoot please follow the below steps. After each step please try reconnecting your Micro-I, if it does not connect move on to the next step.
- Reboot both Starlink and Micro-I.
- Ensure the Starlink router is NOT generating a Wi-Fi network through the settings section of the Starlink app.
- Reboot the Wi-Fi mesh if applicable.
- Move Micro-I to a different location within the range of the Starlink or Wi-Fi mesh access point (optimal range of 3 to 5 meters).
- Having the Micro-I too far away from an access point could cause issues.
- Having the Micro-I too close to an access point could cause issues.
- (If applicable) Split the network provided by the Wi-Fi mesh to 2.4GHz and 5GHz, then connect the Micro-I to the 2.4GHz network.
- Refer to your Wi-Fi mesh's user guide on how to do this, as it may differ between different Wi-Fi meshes.
- Connect Micro-I via ethernet if a spare ethernet port is available.
- Option 1: Connect the Micro-I directly to the Starlink ethernet port using an ethernet cable.
- Option 2: Purchase an ethernet switch. Connect the ethernet switch to your Starlink ethernet port using an ethernet cable, then connect the ethernet switch to the Micro-I using a second ethernet cable (Please note - you may need to purchase an additional ethernet cable).
- Confirm other devices can connect to the Wi-Fi mesh.
- If no other devices can connect, run through basic troubleshooting or reboot the Starlink router by visiting "Settings > Router > Reboot Router".
- If all attempts to get other devices to connect fail, contact the manufacturer of your Wi-Fi mesh.
